Digital Performer
Recording Midi Tracks

To record Apple Software Synth tracks into Digital Performer--

Use the Midi Lab eMacs for this step.

Play enable only the midi tracks.

Change the Hardware Configuration to the Mbox I/O.

If you need to, review Recording in Digital Performer for instructions.

Open the Audio Bundles window and create a stereo input. Assign it to Digidesign hardware channels 1 & 2.

In the Tracks window, create new tracks for the audio you wish to create. You may want to record a mono track for each of your midi tracks, and mix those audio tracks later--or you may want to create a stereo mix of your mdi tracks. Add audio tracks accordingly.

Find the Input column in the Tracks Window, and assign the input of each of your tracks to the Digidesign hardware.

Select one of your tracks, and play enable both midi and audio. Make sure only those tracks are play-enabled. Put the play-enabled audio track into record. by clicking on the record button near the input column.

Open the Audio Monitor window and find the record-enabled track. You may need to scroll to find it--it will be highlighted in orange.

Patch from the mini-jack output on the eMac to the source inputs on the Mbox. You need a special cable with a stereo mini-plug at one end and 2 mono 1/4" jacks at the other.

Make sure the input on the Mbox is set to "line." Plug your headphones into the Mbox, and play your midi tracks. Adjust the source volume knobs on the front of the Mbox until you have a good level. You should see the input in the Audio Monitor meters--get a level somewhere between -12 and -3.

Locate the transport to a place just before the midi begins, and hit the 3 key on the number pad to start recording. When the track has finished, hit the 0 key to stop transport, and hit command S to save.
