What is a Podcast

  • "A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on portable media players and personal computers. A podcast is a specific type of webcast which, like 'radio', can mean either the content itself or the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. The term "podcast" is a portmanteau of the name of Apple's portable music player, the iPod, and broadcast[1]; a pod refers to a container of some sort and the idea of broadcasting to a container or pod describes the process of podcasting. More about the name itself can be found in the history of podcasting article. Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically, using software capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom." --Wikipedia

  • With an iPod, this usually done using software called iTunes, which is available free, and works on both Macs and PC's. With a different MP3 player, there are several free applications that allow this, including iPodder.

  • Accessing other people's Podcasts is fairly simple--you find them using some sort of search software (e.g. iTunes) then subscribe. Once you have subscribed, your search software downloads any existing "shows," then checks periodically for new episodes, which are then downloaded. You can play the shows directly from your computer, or include them when you update the audio files on your mp3 player (e.g. iPod).

  • To make your own Podcasts involves two steps: 1) creating the audio file that people will download, and 2) making it available to the public.
